Feeling homesick? You're not alone!
New city, new home, new people and the lingering smell of pot noodle is nothing compared to your family Sunday roast.
Feeling homesick is completely normal, so try not to panic.
These tips will help you if you're missing home:
- Get out of your room
Get to know your housemates and create your own little family within your flat! Organise a regular activity once a week (eg: movie night or cook off) because everyone needs a little perking up from time to time.
- Try something new
It's never too late to join a new society or club! Check out Hallam Union and try a new sport, learn a language - just keep busy and out of your room so that you meet new people and accomplish something!
- Healthy living
Whether it's exercising, eating healthy or BOTH. Join Hallam Active - A healthy lifestyle will make you feel fresh, energised and create a positive mindset. Plus, exercise releases endorphins (happy hormones) which will cheer you up as you tone up!
- Make it feel like home
Whether it's your favourite fluffy pillow, your toy mascot or pictures of your friends and family - these will all remind you that home is closer than you think.
- Keep in touch
Make use of Facebook, Twitter, Insta etc. to keep up to speed with what your friends are up to. Skype, Facetime, and regular phone calls to your family and friends at home will always perk up that bad day.
- Talk to someone
A lot of people will be feeling the same as you, you're all in the same boat! Before things start getting on top of you, have a chat with friends, lecturers or pop into Student Support Services.
- Be positive
It can be tough but try to block out those negative emotions by staying positive, busy and upbeat. Whenever you're down put your favourite funny film on or set yourself something new to achieve every day of that week.
And remember, if you're really struggling, you can always jump on the train/coach and visit!
