Edinburgh offers lots of great Art Galleries if you need a little break from hectic University life.
- Scottish National Gallery
Located right next to Princes street gardens, this gallery offers a wide variety of Art. From Renaissance works to more modern Impressionistic works there should be something for every art lover here. They even have a selection of Scottish art which is definitely worth having a look at.
- Scottish National Portrait Gallery
This works in this gallery are, you probably already guessed it, Portraits. Located on Queen Street it’s not only the art which amazes in this Gallery. The architecture of the building is amazing and I recommend taking your eyes of the paintings every once in a while, to marvel at it.
- Fruitmarket Gallery
You can find this gallery at 45 Market Street, just next to Waverly station. It isn’t the biggest one of the galleries but the exhibitions of contemporary art are changing every couple of months so there is always something new to discover. They are currently exhibiting works by Mark Wallinger, catch it before it finishes on the 4th of June. I also recommend having a look through their shop while you’re there they have a lot of quirky little things that make perfect gifts for fellow art enthusiasts.
- Stills Gallery
Do you prefer photography over paintings? Not a problem the Stills Gallery on Cockburn street offers just that. Much like the Fruitmarket Gallery their exhibitions are not permanent and are changed very couple of months. In addition to their exhibitions they also offer photography courses. So, if you always wanted to improve your photography why not sign up for one of them. Or if you are already perfect they also offer computers and editing space you can book to work on your photographs in post-production.
I hope you will enjoy these Galleries as much as I do. And did I mention the best thing about all of these? They are free admission so they are a perfect Sunday activity on a student budget!
