Robert's Blog: Days out around Scotland

By Megan 09 Mar 2018

With spring just around the corner I bet you will be looking for a chance to get out and see a bit more of Scotland. There are a lot of places close to Edinburgh that make for a great day, or even a few days out. Here are a few recommendations of some of the best places to go to.  All destinations are easily accessible by train or bus and they make for a fantastic time away from Edinburgh.

North Berwick

Located just twenty five miles from Edinburgh, North Berwick is a beautiful little place right on the coast. When the weather changes to some warmer conditions you can head down to the beach for some fantastic views of the surrounding islands or just sit on the beach and get some much needed relaxation. If you are looking for some activities to do while you are there you can always head out to Tantallon Castle or head down to the harbour and check out the Scottish Seabird Centre.

St Andrews

Just thirty miles north east of Edinburgh is the town of St Andrews. Even though it is known as the home of golf there is so much more to St Andrews than just the golf course. There is a beach which stretches around the town which makes for some breath-taking walks, or you can even visit the world famous St Andrews university and its surrounding grounds. St Andrews also has an aquarium which is very reasonably priced and you even get all day access so you can come and go as you please.

 Callander

Just a little over fifty miles away from Edinburgh is the small town of Callander, from here you can head up to the Trossachs National Park and walk along the banks of Loch Lomond. There is a walkway which takes you through the heart of the national park and rewards you with some fantastic views of the hills and lochs which surround the park. While you won't be able to take in all it has to offer even one day, it will still be a place you will never forget.

Aviemore

Aviemore is a bit further away from the other places mentioned but it is probably the most beautiful place on this list. Located in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Aviemore has some of the most beautiful views you will ever see. From Aviemore you can head up to the mountain by shuttle bus, from there you can take a ride on the mountain railway which is a cable car that takes you around the mountain and shows you the most beautiful views of the surrounding hills and lakes. There is also a ski resort on the mountain so if you are a keen skier or snowboarder you can also hit the slopes. If you are not a fan of the snow you can also head to the nearby Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie and see some tigers, wolves and polar bears.

I recommend taking the time to visit even one of the places on this list and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Although they are relatively close to Edinburgh it will still feel like a mini holiday. Happy Travels.
