Not getting on with your flatmates?
Making friends at with your flatmates isn't always easy...
For the majority of people living in halls, this is their first experience doing something like this, so it can take a little while to get the hang of certain things.
Do any of these sound familiar to things that your flatmates are doing?
- Making the flat messy
Yeah, it's pretty annoying when they do this because of course, you don't want to clean up after them. The best way to approach this is just talking to them about it rather than just letting them leave their things everywhere around the flat. By keeping things nice and tidy, your flat will be a much nicer, cosier place to be.
- Leaving dirty dishes
Not doing the washing up is easily the fastest way to annoy your flatmates and become best friends with bacteria, right? Again, remind them of them and try keep them on top of it. The best way to keep out of bad books is to remember to wash up your pots after you've eaten.
- Playing loud music
Have you got a flatmates who decides to blast music at 2am when everyone is trying to get their beauty sleep? Ask them if they'd mind wearing headphones if they like listening to music at night or even if they're binging TV shows on Netflix. You don't have to be arsey, just a polite conversation can fix it.
- Avoiding paying your debts
There will come a time when your flatmate doesn't have enough money for the taxi home and you will have their back, but what happens if they just never pay your back? Remind them abot it and if they keep forgetting, just ask if they mind paying for something for you to make up to cost.
- Causing drama
Having a falling out with flatmates and friends is normal; friendships aren't a straight path, they're windy and bumpy. Although, purposely causing drama for the sake of it is just pointless and makes people uncomfortable. If you have a problem with a flatmate, then sort it out quickly and privately instead of making it a big deal out of it.
You'll notice that throughout this, our biggest piece of advice is to talk about your problems rather than just letting it escalate and turn into a huge row. We've identified the main problems, but if there is anything else or you're just really struggling, speak to the team in your accommodation or pop into the FutureLets office on campus.
